No, It’s Not Too Late to Learn an Instrument

Band camp.

When we look back on the music lessons of our youth, we have no nostalgia for the logistics of being dropped at some stranger’s house for lessons or staying at school for band practice longer than we’d hoped. It all tipped the endeavor into straight-up chore territory; no wonder so many of us abandoned our musical pursuits. But these days, our connected ways mean it’s no hassle to simply jump on your chosen device and take a lesson—free and clear of the piano teacher’s hissing cat. We’ve rounded up some effective places to start if you’re ready to make some music.

Strum along.

A budding musician tipped us off to Marty Music for all things guitar. Marty has something for all levels, along with reviews of music gear lest you overspend on your new hobby. With new videos almost every day, you can find exercises or just search for your favorite song.

Feedback (the good kind).

If, like us, you need lots of feedback from your lessons, then Yousician is for you. The site uses your own device’s built-in microphone to give you real-time feedback on your playing or singing. More recently, the site has paired with artists like Metallica and Jason Mraz for specific lessons.

Private school.

No doubt COVID taught us the myriad of things we could do over Zoom. While it can’t help you with that pesky mute button, Wyzant allows you to pair with a tutor (for more than music lessons alone) and match up with a time and price of your choosing.

Go on a Fender bender.

Chefs go to Cordon Bleu, guitarists go to Fender—so it makes sense that this most storied of guitar makers would have an equally legendary lesson subscription. Similar to others, it lets you choose specific lessons, songs or chord challenges, and also offers a thriving community in addition to some giveaways.
