Gen Z Trends, Decoded

Know your BTS from BS.

When we think back to the days of eyerolling and exclaiming “duh” as our parents dared to question a trend, we could crawl under a proverbial pet rock. Sure, we’re loathe to elicit those same eyerolls with our questions (looking at you Billie Eilish), but we’re also curious A.F. around here. We did the asking so you don’t have to. We’ve rounded up some of the latest trends from the younger folk, along with the resources that helped us steer clear of all the “duh”s. Here’s your “what the hell will these kids think of next” primer.

Tok around the clock.

Sure, you’ve heard of the super successful social network (if for no other reason than your struggle to get your hands on some feta cheese when this recipe went viral). But how, exactly, did the company go from a home for silly dances to full-on sensation? We enjoyed finding out via The TikTok Story Podcast from Foundering, which dives deep on the company’s evolution.

I spy a trend.

When friends began to send around the crazy video for Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” little did we know it was less one-hit wonder than the beginning of a megatrend carried on by bands like BTS and Blackpink. Luckily, our friends from “Explained” were nice enough to serve up K Pop Explained, using their superpowers to pack a short episode with all we will ever need to know about the origins of K Pop.

WTF are NFTs?

If talk of NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) has crept into your business, sports and culture news, this

article will catch you up on the deets. As for the why—we’re still fumbling for it, but we did appreciate a fuller discussion of it on this episode of “ESPN Daily.” The insight that sticks with us? If your whole life has been digital, it would logically follow to collect digital things.

Buy low, sell high?

If you’re feeling a left out because you’ve been buying shares of companies whose underlying businesses seem poised for growth, you’re not alone. Welcome to the wonderful world of Meme Stocks. This episode of “The Daily” and a new book, The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees, shed light on the most high-profile of them all—and the multi-layered story behind it.
