Giving Thanks: Thoughtful Ways to Express Your Gratitude

Count the blessings anyway.

Much has been written about “gratitude” and its superpowers. On a basic level, it means sitting firmly in the present, appreciating what we have rather than striving for what we don’t. While we believe this should be a year-round type of thing, we don’t mind taking this time of year as a kick in the pants, either. (Helloooo, it’s called THANKSgiving.) Noted: This hasn’t been the year any of us planned or asked for—and, sure, it’s fine to feel bad about that—but we’re still counting more blessings than curses when we take the time to take stock.

Tell someone they’re essential.

Confession time: We’re on a first-name basis with our baristas. So we’ve made a practice in recent years to arrive with a small gift card in hand for them once they break out those telltale red cups. This year, we’re adding grocery store and UPS delivery clerks to that list. Simply letting people know that you couldn’t do it (whatever your “it” may be) without them feels more important than ever.

Take away the layaway.

Inspired by a dear friend, we began the practice of being a layaway Santa—going to stores and paying off what we could for someone saving up. Just imagining someone stretching to make holiday wishes come true, then getting the call that we’d put them in the free and clear, makes our hearts expand at least threefold.

Mail it in.

For the first time ever, Operation Santa has gone national. The good folks at USPS (who also get our annual thanks) receive a lot of letters addressed to the jolly one, with wishes ranging from the toy variety to essential needs. Your mission—if you choose to accept it—is to adopt a letter(s), read it, pick up a gift and send it off. No reindeer required.
