The Grown-Up’s Guide
The new way to thank you, next.
We’ve been circulating a spot-on funny meme that reads, “Whenever I get asked to do something I don’t want to do I just answer ‘in a pandemic?’ and it’s worked pretty well so far.” Though we’re missing social interaction as much as anyone, we have to admit that quarantine times did help throw down some boundaries we’ve been too lazy or fearful to erect ourselves. Ask any introvert how helpful low social expectations have been to their cause; even the extroverts among us can now see we were giving away too much of our precious time. As a mom we trust is fond of saying, “either do it and enjoy it OR don’t do it and don’t feel guilty about it.”
Could it really be that simple? As we start fielding invites again, let’s not abandon our hard-won lessons. Since we’re grown-ups, we know life is too short to spend it doing things we don’t want to do. (And let’s remember safety’s still first—not all of us are vaccinated and we are still learning how long inoculation will last, so best to still abide CDC guidance.) As for the honor of your presence, don’t worry—we got you with a Verse approved decision tree for all those requests.
