How To Craft a (Personal) Self Evaluation
The reviews are in.
As the year comes to a close, one of the things we are decidedly not missing is the infamous ritual of our corporate past, the dreaded year-end review. Somehow, bottling feedback for one grand sit-down always had a whydidn’tyoutellmeIhadfoodinmyteeth quality to it. It seems we’re not alone, as companies such as Microsoft and Accenture are doing away with the annual approach to performance assessments. But before we abandon the practice entirely, we suggest you schedule a one-on-one with you and yourself to review 2020—if only to see how far you’ve come (and give yourself a big fat raise). We’ve Verse-ified the boring, cookie-cutter review template to give you some news you can actually use.
The Verse’s better-for-you annual review
List three things you’re most proud of this year (be as specific as possible).
What skill(s) did you employ to produce the outcomes listed above?
List three things you learned this year (this can be a skill or something you learned about yourself or others). What do you want to learn in 2021?
When you think about one thing that could have gone better, what advice would you give yourself for the future?
What is your number-one goal for the first three months of 2021 (Again, be as specific as possible—describe how you will know you have achieved it.)? What are the top three things you will need to do to reach it? Is there anything holding you back from reaching it?
With these insights top-of-mind, you’re well on your way to a 2021 promotion.
