Summer Swaps for Home
Summer-ize your abode.
As JFK famously reminded us, “The best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” And while we aren’t suggesting you actually repair your roof (unless, of course, yours is in disrepair), we do suggest some smart swaps and prioritization of chores that will be far easier to tackle in warmer weather. Think of it as the summer version of snow tires. Besides, we’re willing to bet that opening up your home to friends is once again on your summer wish list this year—so a little summer sprucing can’t hurt.
Lighten your linens.
Yes, this might mean actually going with linens—as in linen sheets—which are light and breathable in summer months. But also, you might want to swap out heavy duvets and blankets for their warm-weather counterparts like coverlets and cotton blankets. This would also be an excellent time to get heavier blankets and comforters cleaned (or launder them yourself) while they’re on hiatus.
Turn over your toiletries.
Survey your grooming routines for the chance to make warmer-weather swaps. Prime places to look? Heavier creams and serums meant for winter can be clogging when the temperatures climb—so think about lighter variations for summer (we love that one of our favorites, Weleda Skin Food, has made a light version of their formula). Everyone should be adding in extra sunscreen (go for the higher protection); we especially like those that do double duty like this one. Last, for those of us who may be shaving more, think about really prepping your skin with a glycolic wash and a great shaving cream that opens up pores and helps stave off shaving skin woes.
Plant yourself.
Whether you truly have a garden to tend to or just want to style up some containers, nothing will make your home feel more summery than plants. We admit we’re partial to containers—a great way to dip your green thumb into gardening, easy to move around and accommodating for different functions in your space. If you plan to keep them outside year round, consider that clay and ceramics might crack in colder weather, unlike composite containers. Try to get a variety of sizes to make it interesting. The magic container formula? A thriller, a filler and a spiller. You can put all three in one container or give each their own home. The thriller is obvious—it’s the star of the show (think bold and colorful). The filler is also as it sounds—it fills up the space where soil would otherwise show. The spiller is a wilder type, something natural looking that spills over to keep your container garden from feeling overly fussy.
