Verse Picks: Sustainable Clothing Brands

Green looks good on you.

We’ve come a long way from the early days of eco-fashion—where the offerings may have been eco, but certainly were not fashion. The great landscaper and decorator Bunny Mellon (of Rose Garden fame) liked to say that “nothing should be noticed” of her unfussy style, and we think the same maxim should apply to an environmentally conscious wardrobe. Fortunately, we are in a golden age of material innovation (see leather from mushrooms, fabric from pineapple leaves) and designers are happy to seize the sustainable moment. While we still welcome secondhand shopping to reduce waste, we’ve also found several new-to-us items that look great while doing some good. (Note to self: While several brands have introduced eco-friendly materials, they aren’t always accompanied by people-friendly work environments, so remember to look beyond the label.)

Water polo.

Using a fabric made entirely of plastic bottles with a waterless dyeing process, Ralph Lauren’s earth polo for men and women is the beloved classic in a new form you can feel good about. After several washes, we see no difference from our polos of yore, but for that extra sense of style that comes from being kind to our oceans and land.

Green jeans.

If fashion had a wasteful process super villain, denim would certainly be it. Luckily, Levi’s is making it easier for you to purchase that pre-loved pair via their Second Hand Shop. Beyond the planet-friendly benefits of repurposing, think of it as a faster route to that perfectly worn-in look.

Kinder soles.

We’ve loved Veja sneakers since they first arrived on the scene. With a decidedly old-school court shoe look—along with a new-classic take on the runner—they convey effortless cool, and no one would ever know you’re sporting recycled plastic bottles. While most styles do use some leather and suede, there are entirely vegan models on offer for men, women and littles as well. Talk about sustainable steps forward.

Pleather forever.

In case you doubted that it’s about the branding, pleather, now known as vegan leather, has come into its own and gotten good. Not only does it now look as luxe as can be, it’s a lot cooler (literally) than the real thing. In our carts? These now undeniably practical leather (ish) shorts. We’ll sport them with a tank and chic slides for summer or with tights and boots come cooler weather. The same site’s offerings for men are equally slick.

Sporty spice.

When it comes to sustainable fashion, Stella McCartney is the OG. With gorgeous designs and expert tailoring from the start, you’d hardly know you’re wearing a higher purpose. There’s no end in sight for the designer’s athleisure looks, and luckily her partnership with Adidas provides an easy and affordable entry point. We’re clicking to buy these springy bike shorts, and even imagining them with loafers and a button-down once we’re venturing out again.
