Your New Favorite Sweater

The (re)Verse: sweater weather edition.

Welcome to a sparkly new feature called the (re)Verse, in which we indulge in some sartorial sentimentality and resurface the wears of our youth—reminding ourselves that our fashions were, are and always will be cool. (Look no further than the 80s inspired fashion being churned out in collaboration with Netflix’s Stranger Things. See?) As we scrolled through this fall’s offerings, we were delighted to see fresh interpretations of so many of our fuzzy favorites. So we’ve rounded up the best sweaters for those struts down the proverbial halls.

For shoulder season.

Before the ubiquity of the sweatshirt, there was the classic cotton sweater to help you transition from summer to fall. It was pretty basic in the best way—the flourishes might come from a secondary piece, like a colorful polo’s popped collar peeking out. We were happy to find these upleveled versions: a linen option and this cotton fisherman’s sweater (which might remind you of your fave Forenza knits).

The O.G.

We are happy to say we’ve joined the chorus of those who declare “J.Crew is back, baby.” Both their new women’s and men’s designers have respectively cast their gaze back to the brand’s storied past and said “more of that, please.” To wit: this roll neck sweater and cable knit cardigan give us all those old-school catalog feels, but look as fresh as can be.

Fjord fleece.

L.L. Bean has, from time to time, brought back their Norwegian Sweater (the very sweater one of us donned in her senior pic) and they are usually available secondhand, but we also can’t deny this fleece interpretation along with this one for men.

Man’s best friend.

J. Press’ shaggy dog is that knit you will reach for again and again. Despite its fuzzy exterior, it wears like a dream and never itches. It is technically made for men, but we have found the smaller sizes to work well for women—especially those done in a trim fit. Designer Todd Snyder paired with the brand to render the sweater in brighter colors. Do not try, just buy. Thank you for coming to our TED talk.

Fair weather friendly.

We always loved a good fair isle sweater, named for a northern Scottish island. The multi-colored and heavily patterned knit goes with anything and adds some dopamine to your dressing. You need not go across the pond for this one—we found a women’s version here and love this one for men, too.
